A great party requires a stunning outfit, and an amazing makeup appearance. Although costumes for parties are relatively easily accessible–given the ever-growing number of black and white gowns, minis sequins and patent pumps that are high-to-the-heavens-high-in styles can be difficult to create. In the end, a stunning makeup look requires more than the eye, face and lip products required for it. Knowing how to apply these cosmetics is vital also.
For us, we are fortunate that celebrity makeup professionals Jessica Marie, Benjamin Puckey, Donni Davy, and Ashunta Sheriff were more than willing to share their best tips and tricks to achieve an elegant, glamorous look. Read on to learn more.
Always Start With Clean Skin
However skilled you are with doing your makeup Marie suggests that if don’t begin with a clean skin tone, the final result will not look as good. So prior to reaching for your makeup, make sure any remnants of the previous morning’s make-up, dust and grime have been removed. An easy and quick way to ensure that your skin remains as fresh as it can be prior to applying your makeup is to apply an exfoliating balm like the Relevant Your Skin Sighted The Melt It Off Cleanser ($28).
Harness the Power of Skincare
After cleansing your face, be sure to to run through your complete routine for skincare, as well as give the skin time to dry prior to applying any other products. “For evening makeup, I love to focus on creating a beautiful luminescent base that gives extra dimension in lower lighting,” says Puckey. “Start with a hydrating face mask like Cle de Peau’s Illuminating Concentrate ($160) to plump skin, increase radiance, and even out the complexion.” For the final step, to give your skin an additional dose of water, Puckey suggests applying a serum and finishing with a rich moisturizing cream (that will not be able to pill underneath the foundation).
Don’t Skip the Primer
After your skin has dried then it’s time to get into your makeup. The most important step is applying primer because it provides an even surface that your makeup can adhere to and enhance the durability of your appearance. “One of my absolute favorites is the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer ($22)–it’s a sweat-proof, cry-proof, SPF 15, oil-free magic seal,” Marie declares.
When you have applied primer Marie advises skin to be prepped using Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter ($17) The product is intended to be used under foundation. For the most beautiful effects, she suggests you put it over the top areas of the face.
Don’t just focus on preparing your face, however the eyes may be benefited from a little priming also. Marie claims that she begins all eye makeup by applying the use of a primer. “The P.Louise Base ($15) is an artist’s favorite,” she says. “This base will ensure your shadow not only stays but performs.”
Focus on Your Eyes or Your Lips–Not Both
While you might appreciate the look of a bold lips and an eye that is statement-making, Puckey says to choose one or the other “If you do a bold eye look, choose a nude lip color that doesn’t wash out your complexion.” If you choose to go with the boldest lip (think Red, Barbiecore pink or something darker) He recommends keeping your lids slightly moderate in color.
“If there’s a color you’re afraid to wear, try it at night,” Puckey suggests. “It won’t look as intense.”
Eyes Before Face
If you’re looking to keep your eyelids simple or trying to stand out It’s best to apply liner, shadow, and mascara prior to moving on to the rest of your face. This way, if some product gets smudges on your cheeks, it’ll be simple to get rid of it instead of spreading an amazingly-applied makeup.
If you’re looking for eyeshadow options, Marie has you covered. “Right now my all-time favorite eyeshadow palette is the Makeup by Mario Master Mattes Eyeshadow Palette ($48),” she states. “[It’s] a one-stop shop that can be used to create all the latest and greatest trending looks.”
Don’t Be Afraid to Go Bold
While neutrals may be the norm, Davy encourages playing with blue specifically. “A fun [party makeup look] is to try a light blue shadow, such as Half Magic’s new Eyeshadow Single ($12) in Daydreamies, or a periwinkle such as Half Magic’s Chromaddiction Matte Eye Paint + Liner ($24) in Sky Juice,” she states. “Pack the pigment a little more on your eyelid (next to your lash line) and then blend it up and out so that it’s super diffused around the edges the higher and closer it gets to your eyebrows.”
Are you not ready to put on blue eyeshadow? Davy suggests you can achieve the look by using liner as well. “If you are new to blue eyeshadow you can start with dark blue eyeliner; it’s a great gateway to wearing blue because it’s not too far from black,” she adds. “You can also layer a little blue glitter over your black liner for a pop of sparkle and subtle color.” To achieve the look, she recommends you select a glitter liner that is user-friendly such as Half Magic’s Glitterpill Eye Paint and Liners ($20) from Neptune Daddy.
Define Your Look With Dark Eyeliner
No matter what you pick for the bold or neutral shade Eyeliner is essential. It frames your eyes and can help to enhance the overall appearance. “For eyeliner, I love the One/Size Point Made Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner Pen ($19) in Bodacious Black and EM Cosmetics’ Illustrative Eyeliner ($22),” Marie declares.
If you’re trying to find ways to pair your eyeliner with it, Davy has just the perfect solution. “I think frosty lipstick with darker liner and wet shiny-looking grungy eyes are going to be really big this season,” she explains. To bring this style in the right direction, she prefers to apply a calligraphy-style eyeliner pencil and glittery eyeshadow while keeping the rest the face more subtle, with a tiny amount of blush.
Embrace a Little Shimmer
When it comes to shimmery eyeshadow, Davy says there’s no moment to be too late to try out sparkle and shimmer. To create a more sophisticated and dimensional look, Davy suggests beginning with a matte foundation and then finishing with a metallic shimmer and then adding a little glitter to lift it to the next level.
Accent Your Eyes With Full, Fluttery Lashes
Another method to enhance your eyes at an event? with lashes, naturally. “Adding a lash is a must on a night out on the town,” Sheriff says. Her favorite falsies to wear are made by her brand name. “The Ashunta Sheriff Beauty Magnetieyes Luxury Lashes ($30+) come in five styles perfect for every type of look you would want to have for a night of fun,” she states. “There are even Colormags ($45) which come in three amazing colors to match outfits or just create a bold eye look without the commitment of colored lash extensions.” To get the longest-lasting magnetic flutter, Sheriff suggests to wait for the liner’s magnetic to dry for 3 to 5 hours before applying the strip of lashes.
Don’t Go Too Heavy With Foundation
Looking perfect is one thing, but trying to conceal it with a thick foundation is a completely different. According to Puckey the secret to create a flawless makeup look for parties is to be comfortable with you natural appearance.
“Find a foundation that lets your skin look like the best version of itself,” he advises and adds that foundations that have skincare-like benefits are superior. “I’ve used Cle De Peau’s The Foundation ($270) precisely for this reason. It’s light, offers anti-aging benefits and gives skin naturally-appearing glow.”
Are you looking for a premium foundation that is less expensive? “The Haus Labs Triclone Skin Tech Foundation ($45) is the hottest, newest foundation,” Marie claims. “With 20+ infused skincare ingredients, this foundation evens out your skin tone, creating seamless coverage while still feeling lightweight.”
If you’re using a light foundation, however it continues to appear cakey, you’re probably applying it incorrectly. “For a seamless and more naturally radiant look, use your fingers to apply foundation,” Puckey suggests. “Gently massage the skin using circular motions.” After the foundation has been it’s been applied, you can make use of a sponge or brush to further push it down. “[Using a] damp sponge helps to thin or sheer foundation out making, it super lightweight,” Sheriff says.
Create a Lifting Effect With Concealer
Most people think that the only method to lift and shape the appearance of the face is by contour. Sheriff, however, says that applying concealer skillfully can be a boon. For starters, she puts concealer under her chin using a lifting motion from the eye area towards the temples. “Then I create a tree canopy in the center of my forehead and draw the tree trunk down the center of my nose,” she notes, and allows it to rest for a while before mixing it in using the help of a sponge.
After mixing and set, she applies it with the puff of powder that is a soft triangle such as that of the Beautyblender Power Pocket Puff ($15). “This method is known as] baking the product. Baking assists in the creation of lasting makeup that lasts through the night and help you stay energized and in appearance,” she adds.
Create Dimension With Highlighter
Highlighters are often designed to show where light naturally hits your face however Puckey states that it’s a must-have for wear at night, particularly in the event of a party scheduled. “Use a highlighter in the evening to create a beautiful three-dimensional effect and give skin a ‘lit-from-within’ glow,” Puckey states. “Apply highlighter to the temples of the forehead above the brow, the bridge of the nose, on top of the cheekbones, and on the cupid’s bow above the lips.”
You Can Never Go Wrong With a Red Lip
If you like an eye that is bold over a bold eye red is the classic shade to pick. “Red lipstick can change your personality and help you step into the moment,” Puckey states. “Look for a red shade that contains equal parts cool and warm tones to brighten your complexion.”
Make Sure to Chose the Right Formula for Your Lip Product
Even if you have a favourite lip product but when it’s time to have a party it is suggested by Sheriff to find a water-resistant formula. In the end, the final thing you want to happen to happen is for your perfectly shaped lips to be ruined when you’re sipping espresso martinis or eating the charcuterie. “You want your lip products to be waterproof regardless of whether they are gloss or cream textures,” she declares. “It must be waterproof because if it is not, it will slide all over you and other people all night long.”
Luckily for us, a variety of lipsticks that are waterproof are available. However, if you’re looking to go using a reputable product, Sheriff sings high praise for the Haus Labs Atomic Shake Long-Lasting Liquid Lipstick ($26). “It’s shiny and bold but it’s totally waterproof, smudge-proof, and kiss-proof,” Sheriff says.
Balance Your Face With Blush
It’s a fact: Blush is hugely popular in 2022 and it is true for looks for parties as well. “I can’t emphasize enough the importance of blush for an evening look,” Puckey declares. “Flash photography can really wash out the complexion, so it’s necessary to wear a blush.” To achieve an natural-looking blush the expert suggests using a cream blush since “it blends effortlessly into the skin.”
“I learned this technique from Uma Thurman: Apply blush higher on the cheekbones to shape and optically lift your face,” Puckey discusses. “Don’t be afraid to mix two blush colors, either–a red blush paired with a peachy beige can give skin a beautiful natural glow.”
Don’t Forget to Set It
While primer can be helpful but a dusting of makeup setting powder and a spray of setting spray will make your look more enduring. “Setting makeup is key, but still looking hydrated and glowy is crucial,” Sheriff states. She suggests using a moisturizing setting spray such as Ashunta Sheriff Beauty Water Fix It Spray ($20). Ashunta Sheriff Beauty Beauty Water Fix It Spray ($20).
